Perfect Sailing Conditions in Cape Verde

The tropical climate and constant Northeast Trade Winds make Cape Verde an ideal destination for sailors. With sea temperatures around 21°C and air temperatures averaging 25°C during the day, you’ll find the conditions perfect for both sailing and relaxing on deck. The powerful sun is filtered by Saharan dust in the atmosphere, creating a unique light while keeping temperatures comfortable. Evenings are cool, providing relief from the daytime warmth, and while rain is extremely rare, you’ll want a jacket or sweater for evenings on deck.

Island-Hopping Itinerary: Sal, Santiago, São Vicente, and More

Your Cape Verde adventure begins on the island of Sal, where you’ll board the Morgenster in the late afternoon and be warmly welcomed by the crew. After a good night’s rest, we’ll set sail for Santiago, arriving at the island’s picturesque bay of Tarrafal in the early morning of day three. You’ll have a full day to explore the island, with the option to join a guided excursion. The next leg of the journey takes us toward São Vicente, where clear skies sometimes allow us to spot the still-active Fogo volcano in the distance. After another peaceful night at sea, the islands of São Vicente and Santo Antão will appear on the horizon. We’ll anchor in the bustling harbor of Mindelo, Cape Verde’s second-largest city, where you can explore the markets, restaurants, and shops at your leisure.

Discovering Santo Antão and São Nicolau

Considered the most beautiful island in the archipelago, Santo Antão is a must-see. It’s also the greenest and most fertile of all the Cape Verdean islands. We’ll take you on a breathtaking hike from the edge of a volcanic crater down through lush landscapes that will leave you in awe. The next destination is São Nicolau, where we hope to spot dolphins and pilot whales along the way. While on São Nicolau, you can visit the dramatic sea-sculpted cliffs of Carbeirinho or hike in the Monte Gordo National Park, offering even more spectacular views. You might also get a chance to visit one of the local distilleries to see how the traditional grogue is made.

Boa Vista and Beyond

Our journey continues to Boa Vista, known for its stunning beaches and wandering sand dunes. While the island has seen significant tourism development, with large resorts dotting the coastline, it’s still a wonderful place to explore. Whether you’re walking along pristine beaches or discovering the island’s natural wonders, Boa Vista provides the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure.

Sailing as Part of the Crew on the Morgenster

Sailing on a large, square-rigged tall ship like the Morgenster is a one-of-a-kind experience. The waters between the Cape Verde Islands are ideal for sailing, with consistent trade winds blowing at a force of 4 to 6 Beaufort, and the Morgenster feels at home navigating the long ocean swells. You won’t just be a passenger on this voyage—you’ll be part of the crew, assigned to a watch and given instructions on how to actively help sail, steer, and navigate the ship. The crew will also teach you how to assist in daily life aboard and respond in emergencies. No previous sailing experience is required, and the crew is more than happy to show you the ropes—literally! Whether you’re handling the lines or simply enjoying the beauty of the ocean, you’ll quickly feel at ease.
