Sailing Adventure: From Faial to Den Helder on the Morgenster

On March 16th, you’ll step aboard the Morgenster in the picturesque harbor of Horta, located on the island of Faial in the Azores. We recommend arriving a few days earlier to fully experience the island, which is in its full spring bloom at this time of year. Faial is renowned for its lush landscapes, and spring is the perfect season to explore its beauty. The weather here is famously variable, often described as having four seasons in a day, so while it’s warm, packing a rain jacket along with your shorts is a good idea.

Once you board the Morgenster, the crew will provide a detailed introduction to life on board, including safety procedures and what to expect on the journey ahead. From that moment, your ocean voyage begins.

A True Ocean Adventure

This sailing adventure is all about embracing the open ocean. With few stops along the way, we’ll be fully immersed in the rhythm of the sea. After a good night’s rest in Horta, we’ll set sail, and the journey truly begins. The winds in spring can be unpredictable, meaning we’ll frequently need to adjust the sails, reef, unreef, or change course to take advantage of favorable winds. There’s a chance we may encounter a low-pressure system, bringing powerful winds and light rain, but after the passage of the front, we’re likely to enjoy clearer skies and favorable westerly winds to carry us forward.

Ocean Wildlife and Changing Seas

One of the most exciting parts of this journey is the wildlife. As we sail through the Azores, we’re in prime waters for whale sightings. The surrounding seas are home to a variety of marine life, and even as we venture further into the Atlantic, we’ll be accompanied by seabirds, dolphins, and possibly even a moonfish. The open ocean may seem vast and empty, but it’s teeming with life if you know where to look. Every day at sea offers a new chance to encounter nature’s wonders.

As we get closer to the English Channel, you’ll notice the changing color of the water. The deep blue of the Atlantic shifts to green as we approach the continental shelf, where the sea floor rises dramatically from five kilometers deep to just 200 meters. This area is rich in nutrients, attracting seabirds and fishing vessels, marking the passage into more familiar coastal waters.

Exploring English or French Ports

If the weather is favorable and we make good time, we’ll have the opportunity to stop at an English or French port along the way. These stops offer a chance to stretch your legs and explore coastal towns, adding a cultural aspect to the adventure. As we sail through the Strait of Dover, we’ll be nearing the end of our journey, entering the North Sea for the final miles to Den Helder.

We’re expected to arrive in Den Helder by March 29th, where you’ll disembark the following morning after breakfast in Willemsoord, the historic maritime heart of the city. This will be the conclusion of an unforgettable ocean voyage.

Becoming Part of the Crew

Sailing on a square-rigged tall ship like the Morgenster is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, whether you’re a seasoned sailor or setting foot on a ship for the first time. You won’t just be a passenger—you’ll be an active member of the crew. You’ll be assigned to a watch and receive instruction on sailing, steering, and navigating the ship. The professional crew will guide you through all the tasks, from handling the lines to learning how to manage emergencies. No previous sailing experience is necessary, as the crew will patiently explain every aspect of ship life.

You’ll quickly find that life at sea is both rewarding and enjoyable. Most guests love the hands-on experience, and while the level of your involvement is up to you, everyone plays a part in the success of the journey. The Morgenster handles beautifully on the long ocean swells, especially in the steady winds between the Cape Verde Islands and Azores, making this a smooth yet thrilling experience.
