Yet, despite the heavy reliance on fish, there’s no overwhelming smell of fish markets or harbors. The secret? Meticulous cleanliness.
Walking through the bustling fish markets, you see vendors working swiftly, filleting fresh fish with skill. Their hands move with precision, ensuring every step is done with care and hygiene. At the docks, boats return from sea, and before the next journey, they are thoroughly washed with seawater. It’s a continuous cycle of work and cleaning, an art as much as a necessity.
Cape Verdean Work Ethic: Keeping the Ocean Clean
The Cape Verdean people take pride in their workspaces. From the moment the fish are unloaded, every surface is scrubbed. The tables, the floors, even the knives, everything is cleaned repeatedly. This dedication ensures that the markets and harbors remain fresh and hygienic, creating an environment where both locals and visitors can enjoy seafood in its purest form.
On our tall ship adventure sailing trip, we had the chance to experience this firsthand. A trip to a local fish market introduced us to Cape Verde’s deep connection with the ocean. The market was lively, filled with conversation, yet spotless. Later, back on board, our crew prepared a meal using locally sourced fish, honoring the same standards of cleanliness we saw on land.

That evening, as the sun set over the Atlantic, 
we enjoyed a delicious seafood dinner on our tall ship. Every bite carried the taste of the ocean, but also a newfound respect for the hands that brought it to us.
