The Journey Home: Morgenster’s Return Voyage from Cape Verde
After three months of sun-drenched sailing between the Cape Verde Islands, the Tall Ship Morgenster has once again turned her bow northward, setting course for her home port of Den Helder. From the 1st of December until the 28th of February, we’ve been navigating the warm waters of the Atlantic, embracing the trade winds, and introducing countless guests to the thrill of square-rigged sailing. But every adventure must come full circle, and now it’s time for the grand journey home. A voyage that never fails to test both ship and crew.
A Homeward Bound Crossing Like No Other
Leaving the tropical shores of Cape Verde, we hoisted our sails for what would be an epic passage north. And speaking of sails, we hope that this time we can do again something truly special. On this voyage, we hope to have the rare chance to set Morgenster’s stunning studding sails. A sight few have the privilege of witnessing. If you haven’t seen it yet, check out this incredible moment in this YouTube video. A breathtaking reminder of what real sailing looks like. These additional sails extend our canvas area, catching every ounce of wind and making the most of the Atlantic’s generous trade winds.
The voyage home is never just a straight shot. The North Atlantic’s mood changes by the mile, and while the first part of the journey offered steady winds and warm sunsets, the northern latitudes reminded us why sailing in March is not for the faint-hearted. The crew quickly adapted from shorts and sunglasses back to woolen hats and rain gear, as the first storms of spring rolled across our path. Through it all, Morgenster sailed like the seasoned traveler she is, slicing through the waves, carrying us safely towards home.
Den Helder Awaits – And So Does a New Challenge!
By the time Den Helder appears on the horizon, we’ll have completed yet another incredible Atlantic crossing, adding new stories to Morgenster’s long history. But our journey doesn’t end when the sails are furled and the mooring lines are secured because now, it’s time for something just as important: maintenance season!
For the next six weeks, Morgenster will undergo her annual maintenance period, ensuring she’s in top shape for the season ahead. After this she will be eager to go to sea again and deliver more adventures and experiences to our trainees and guests.
Fair winds, and see you on deck, whether for a voyage or as a visitor!
