Crossing the Equator: From Mindelo to Fernando de Noronha Aboard the Morgenster
Your journey begins where the rhythm of music meets the rhythm of the sea, on the island of São Vicente, Cape Verde. Just a short taxi or bus ride from Cesária Évora International Airport, you’ll arrive in Mindelo, a vibrant, sun-drenched harbor town wrapped in dusty volcanic hills that could pass for the moon on a budget. While rain is rare here, smiles are not. The locals are warm, the streets are alive with color, and in the bay lies our proud Tall Ship Morgenster, ready to begin her next oceanic adventure.
On Thursday, October 2nd, our crew will collect you by tender from the Floating Bar. Because where else would a proper voyage begin? As soon as you’re aboard and the formalities are sorted, we’ll weigh anchor and set sail. Even in the shelter of the harbor, the sails go up, and if the winds are generous, you might just witness the rare spectacle of our stunning studding sails being hoisted. (Missed it? Watch the magic on our YouTube Video)
Into the Trade Winds and Beyond the Horizon
As we pass between São Vicente and Santo Antão, the breeze funnels through the channel with a punch. It’s the perfect way to wave goodbye to the islands, sun on your face, sails full, and adventure ahead. Within 24 hours, we’ll glide past Ilha Brava and, if visibility allows, you’ll spot the impressive cone of Fogo in the distance. We won’t stop this time The Atlantic calls, and we’ve got an equator to cross.
Onboard, you’ll quickly become part of the Morgenster’s working crew. No passengers here, just guest crew eager to learn the ropes. You’ll stand watch, hoist sails, steer, navigate, and explore the sailor’s arts like celestial navigation, weather reading, and rigging maintenance. Don’t worry, no experience required, just a willing spirit (and perhaps some sunscreen). Along the way, we’re often joined by pods of dolphins, soaring seabirds, and the occasional moonfish or flying fish, usually being pursued by a hungry Mahi Mahi.
A highlight of the voyage is the stop at the Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago A tiny collection of rocky outcrops in the middle of nowhere, formed not by volcanoes but by the earth’s crust itself rising from the abyss. With the ocean floor over 3,000 meters deep, this is one of the most remote spots you’ll ever visit. And then, of course, comes the crossing of the equator, where landlubbers-turned-sailors must answer to King Neptune in a salty ceremony you won’t soon forget.
Landfall in Brazil and an Adventure Complete
With the southeast trades at our back, the final leg to Fernando de Noronha unfolds like a dream. This Brazilian archipelago is known for its turquoise waters, historic ruins, and abundant marine life. After our Atlantic crossing, it feels like arriving in paradise and for divers and snorkelers, it truly is. We recommend staying a few days after arrival to soak it all in. On October 16th, we’ll share one last breakfast together before saying farewell, each of us carrying the memories of a true Atlantic crossing and the pride of having crossed the equator under sail.
Your Role on Board the Morgenster
Sailing a square-rigged tall ship like the Morgenster is a one-of-a-kind experience, perfect for both veteran sailors and curious newcomers. The ocean between Cape Verde and Brazil is made for this kind of vessel Steady winds, gentle swells, and wide open space. You won’t see much shipping traffic, just the occasional wooden fishing boat and maybe a lonely freighter far on the horizon.
As part of our three-watch system, you’ll work in shifts with your fellow guest crew, and receive full instruction from our professional team. From hoisting halyards to plotting positions, you’ll become an active part of life at sea. We match tasks to your interest and ability, everyone helps, no one is left out. And don’t worry, you won’t be scrubbing toilets unless you really want to (that’s usually the Cook’s job to avoid, too!).
Fitness, Safety, and the Spirit of Adventure
We want to keep tall ship sailing accessible for as many people as possible, but it’s important to know: this is a real ocean voyage, not a luxury cruise. You’ll need some physical resilience, especially during sail handling and night watches. Each trip is different in terms of challenge level, and we’re happy to advise which voyage suits you best. If you’re unsure, just contact the office, we’re here to help you find the right adventure.
Join the Morgenster for the voyage of a lifetime where tradition meets the trade winds, and every mile is a memory.
